Judie Jacobs has been a presence in the Atlanta art community since the mid 1980‘s. During that time she has mastered various art media including ceramic sculpture, acrylic and oil painting. Currently, many of her mixed media works explore the intersection of photography and painting, employing digitally altered photographic images, pigment, and the ancient art of encaustics to create a subtly glowing surface. Encaustics is a process first used by Greek artisans thousands of years ago that incorporates the use of hot beeswax and pigment.
The artist states, “My art is intended to summon forth meditative, personal spaces that allow the viewer to connect with deeper moments of inner reflection. Many of my images are like a thin film of pigment and binders floating on a supportive surface and posing a delicate balance similar to the fragile impermanence of life and those fleeting memories of times and places of the journey. At different intervals in life, we are drawn to quiet, safe places wherein we can turn inward to find the gifts which life has bestowed upon us. This is where my art making takes me.”
“She paints in a way that draws one into the beauty of simple scenery...there where the complex and weary mechanicals of this living tend to fall away leaving the viewer in a gentler place. That is how her paintings make me feel.” Sanna Stein
Judie has been an influence in the lives of many young artists through her work as an art educator at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School for the past 23 years. She states that she has found a rich and incredible balance in her own art by spending much of her time in the classroom with children and young adults. Sharing her passion for the creative spirit she strongly believes each of us possess, she encourages her students to explore their interests in a supportive environment that allows them to experiment with various media, subject matter and techniques--hopefully finding their visual voice and learning to express it in ways that are meaningful to them. Representation by several Atlanta galleries has placed her sculptures, paintings and encaustics in numerous private and corporate collections throughout the country.
